Legislation and Regulations

As professional electricians Nene Electrical always strive to adhere to the latest regulations and legislation when carrying out work for our customers. To ensure that the next generation of electricians carry on the same high standards we ensure that our apprentices are well versed in all the latest techniques required by law.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of legislation we comply with in our day to day work and a brief summary of what they are about:

IEE Wiring Regulations (17th Edition) BS7671:2008 - This is the national standard to which all domestic and industrial wiring must conform. The 17th edition of the BS7671: 2008 Regs came into force on 21st January 2008 and applies to the design, erection and verification of electrical installations as well as additions and alterations to existing installations.

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - This act, also referred to as HASAW or HSW is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety at work in the UK. The Health and Safety Executive is responsible for enforcing the Act.

The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 - these Regulations are put in place to ensure the health and safety of people in the workplace when coming into contact with electrical equipment. The Regs impart on every single employer and self employed individual the onus of complying with the what is stipulated and in relation to "matters which are within his control". Whilst this does afford some protection to employers by not making them liable for matters outside their control extreme care still has to be taken when considering the Occupiers Liability Acts and the ramifications this could have if an accident does occur as a result of faulty equipment, for example, causing injury or death to an employee or visitor to your premises.
